Dave Burgess, the musician, songwriter and producer who co-wrote the instrumental rock-and-roll hit “Tequila” and founded the band The Champs, has died at 90 years old.

Burgess died on Oct. 19 in Dover, Tennessee where he lived, according to the late musician’s obituary. No cause of death has been revealed.

Burgess was born on Dec. 3, 1934 in Los Angeles, California, as Sigmund Eck. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Austin “Tex” Burges, and adopted his stepfather’s name as his stage name, adding an extra “s.” He legally changed his name to Dave Burgess in 1959.

The Champs was created after Burgess was brought into Gene Autrey’s Challenge Records as a solo artist to assemble a recording session in hopes of creating a hit for the label, according to Daily Mail.

He then worked with saxophonist Chuck Rio’s trio, to create a B-side called “Train to Nowhere,” which became their most popular song, “Tequila.”

Label executives wanted to release the song but the band needed a name and so they called themselves The Champions, after Autry’s horse, but shortened it to The Champs.

The song quickly became a pop culture staple, hitting No. 1 on the charts in March 1958, his obituary reads.

“Tequila” sold more than a million copies and won the inaugural Grammy for best R&B performance the following year, according to Parade.

It also appeared in Tim Burton’s film “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” and was sung on “America’s Got Talent” by Any Rowell back in 2019, Genius reported.

Beyond his rock-and-roll success, Burgess was married to professional dancer and actress Deon Adair Raab on May 17, 1959.

The couple moved from Hollywood to Montana with their son, David, and daughter, Charmaine, and operated an art gallery, the obituary reads.

After several years, the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee so that Burgess could return to the music business as a producer and songwriter.

Burgess is preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, his wife and daughter, the obituary states.
