Springfield officials launch holiday tourism initiative

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Springfield city officials announced a special tourism initiative on Wednesday, aimed at helping boost the local economy ahead of the holiday season.
According to Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno’s office, holiday tourism can increase local revenue by 40 to 60 percent during peak seasons and, during the holidays, spending can even exceed that amount by 30 percent. Additionally, communities investing in their holiday experiences can see three to five times return on infrastructure investments, so to get accomplish that economic boost, the city’s investing in local attractions like Bright Nights, MGM, and Symphony Hall.
Amanda Spear-Purchase, venue and events director at Springfield Symphony Hall, spoke provided a preview of some of the events they’re hosting this holiday season. “We have a lot going on in December. We start with the Springfield Public Forum on December 1. On December 3, we have the Rock Orchestra returning,” she explained. “We have Blippy coming on [December] 5. On [December] 6, we have Tricia Yearwood coming with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra playing with her.”
Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt said, in all, there are nearly 50 activities going on in a three-week period, meaning there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
