Music spanning the past 50 years of cinema will be performed by an over-80-year-old orchestra on Saturday, June 20. The Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1939, is putting on its summer pops concert for the fourth consecutive year. This year’s performance will take place at the Northfield Golf Club, beginning at 6 p.m.

The seasonal event had its inaugural showcase in 2023, conducted by Pioneer Valley Symphony assistant Anthony Ferreira. He has worked with the organization since 2021 and is the creative mind behind the creation of the summer pops series. Outside of his work with PVSO, Ferreira serves as the choral director at Suffield High School and the director of music at the Second Baptist Church of Suffield.

“The membership had been itching for some pop stuff — like officially the concert is pops — and my dream had always been to do the music of movies and conduct them,” Ferreira said. “It came to be because there’s a real need for it in the area, and the players really wanted to play it. We have seen in the last four years that the audience has really grown, and we now have a following where people will come and say ‘oh! I was here last year.’ We have an audience that just comes to our pops stuff.”

Choice movie soundtracks have been selected for the concert, featuring scores from “Star Wars,” “Jaws,” “Indiana Jones,” “Jurassic Park,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Up,” “Hook” and “Lord of the Rings.” Much of the music performed on June 20 will highlight the work of John Williams, whom Ferreira names is his favorite composer of all time.

“When I get to program a lot of John Williams, it definitely fills my cup,” Ferreira said. “In this concert we have a lot of John Williams … he’s someone who’s given us so many movies and scores.”

Wendy Foxmyn, a violinist who primarily plays second violin and has been in the orchestra for nearly 40 years, said that anyone who appreciates a beautiful night outside, good food and great music will have a wonderful time. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will move to Greenfield High School, with updates posted directly on location is moved, it will be posted on the PVSO’s website.

.Even if it rains, Foxmyn said the spirit of the event will remain intact. With this kind of repertoire, she noted, it ensures everyone has a wonderful time.

“It’s so joyous,” Foxmyn said to Ferreira. “The audience is so excited and we get excited playing this music. It’s just a whole different atmosphere and everybody knows this music — it’s familiar to everybody.”

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for seating. Food and a cash bar will be available. Admission to the event is free, though donations are welcome. The performance runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“The vibe is like Tanglewood,” Ferreira said. “If people know Tanglewood … it’s a very relaxed atmosphere. I think that orchestral concerts can be intimidating for a lot of people, but this is not like that. You’re not sitting in a quiet concert hall having to really pay attention for two hours. … It’s so much fun for everyone, including kids.”
