England and Ghana fans gather in Foxborough for World Cup group-stage match
FOXBOROUGH, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- England and Ghana fans gathered Tuesday at Boston Stadium in Foxborough for a World Cup group-stage matchup.
Fans from both sides filled the area outside the stadium ahead of the match, with Ghana and England competing in Group L. “The World Cup is a massive community and I think it’s brilliant,” one fan said. “I love it.”
Both teams entered the matchup with a chance to move closer to the top spot in Group L. “I’m not one that says we’re gonna win, but I think we’re looking good. We really are,” an England fan said.
A Ghana fan said the team was ready for the challenge. “We know England is one of the favorites in the tournament, but we are the underdogs and we’re ready to take them on,” the fan explained.
The matchup also carried history for some fans, with Ghana gaining its independence from Britain in the 1950s.
“They have traversed so many things that most people don’t have any idea and I think Ghana has what it takes to get to number one,” one fan said.
Outside Boston Stadium, fans waved two different flags but described one football community. “I just came here right before the game and I couldn’t have asked for more,” one fan said.
The winner was expected to move closer to the Round of 32, but fans said the match was about more than the score. “This is about like community,” one fan said. “It’s more than the game. This is what we live for.”
The next game at Boston Stadium will be Norway versus France on Friday.
