WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -- The Irish Cultural Center in West Springfield is opening its soccer field to the community as the World Cup approaches.

The facility features a field dedicated to the Balise family last year. Ed Sullivan, assistant executive director and former mayor of West Springfield, said the field serves as a regional gathering place. “It’s a great place because anybody can use it. It’s a community, regional place to gather,” he added.

Connor Driscoll, events coordinator at the center, said the field hosts more than just soccer. “I mean, if you want to do a football tournament, flag football tournament, ultimate frisbee, whatever. It’s here for the community to be used. As you can see, it’s gorgeous and well-kept. It’s clean,” he explained.

The center plans to host World Cup viewing events during the tournament. “We’re going to have all World Cup events. Any games that are going on in and around the time of business, you know, keep our eyes posted on that. We’re going to have a big schedule posted up on our social medias and on our website about what to watch,” Driscoll noted.

Sullivan said the atmosphere at the field draws crowds. “It’s just a great…it’s a great enthusiastic atmosphere, day in and day out,” he said.

Driscoll said events often extend beyond the games. “It’s just this field completely packed, this patio packed with everyone having a good time, sticking around for some Irish music later Saturday night,” he noted.

Information about hosting events or matches at Balise field is available on the Irish Cultural Center’s website.
