Getting Answers: When collectors issue late payments on excise taxes

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - We’re getting answers after receiving a request from one of you at home.
One viewer wrote to us saying, “I was told the City of Springfield site has a glitch and if I don’t pay in office today, I will have to pay the fee. This unacceptable, nowhere on the bill does it say I would pay a $30.00 late fee after 14 days of being late.”
The same viewer also wrote, “why do I have a late fee? Springfield had a glitch in their system, and we are expected to pay more taxes.”
After seeing similar questions on Facebook, we took this question straight to the City of Springfield. Steve Lonergan, the Treasurer and Collector for the city explained that, by law, the city must have proof of mailing when it issues a bill.
He added that the taxpayer is always given a month to pay the bill, and that bill is late a day after the due date.
