Adams Fire District passes entire warrant unanimously

ADAMS — In 16 minutes, without question or comment, 38 voters of the Adams Fire District passed the district’s annual budget, and dispensed with warrant articles that could add three full-time firefighters to the roster.
In addition, voters approved spending $8,000 on a study that will be the first step toward replacing the antiquated station as well as rehabilitating the Glen Street Pumping Station at a cost of $203,500.
Also, voters approved having the Prudential Committee petition for home-rule legislation that would allow firefighters to work until age 70. The mandatory retirement age of firefighters in Massachusetts is 65.
Voters also approved a plan to make the clerk and treasurer's position appointed rather than elected.
The budget of $3.63 million represents an increase of 26 percent over the current year and was voted on in segments, with application for a $645,000 three-year FEMA staffing grant accounting for part of the increase.
An owner of a home in Adams valued at $243,823 will see an increase of $73.15 per year. The annual obligation would total $285.28 for fire protection in fiscal year 2027. For the same homeowner, water bills will increase by just $2.12 more per year, bringing the annual water bill to $373.21.
