ADAMS — Adams Fire District voters will be asked to fund firefighter positions and handle some infrastructure projects at its meeting on May 27.

The district is seeking to fund a budget of nearly $3.16 million, a 9.67 percent increase over the current year’s spending. That figure includes a package of 10 warrant articles.

The biggest ticket is $203,500 to pay for communications and other upgrades to both the Glen Street pumping station and the associated East Orchard Terrace water tank.

In addition, there are two warrant articles to pay salaries for three fulltime firefighters, each at a cost of close to $100,000. Two of those positions would be funded partly through a Federal Emergency Management grant. The cost to hire the third would be borne fully by the district.

Voters are also being asked to approve spending $44,000 to buy the shoring system that supports the building. The district is now paying $2,000 a month to rent the system.

Thomas Satko, chair of the Prudential Committee of the Adams Fire District, said the Fire District is looking to build a new station, but it’s not going to happen immediately.

Related to the need for a new station is a warrant article for $8,000 to pay for a needs study that will define what a new station might look like and how much land is needed for it.

Two warrant articles, each of $10,000 would pay for a dam inspection at Bassett Reservoir and for payments in lieu of taxes to the town of Cheshire.

A transfer into the reserve fund of $40,000 rounds out the requests along with $2,000 to pay the Town of Adams for collection of Adams Fire District taxes.
