Agawam city councilor calls for changes to busy intersection

AGAWAM, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Safety concerns tonight after a pedestrian is seriously injured in crash last night in Agawam. It’s a story we first brought to you as breaking news Thursday night. Now, one newly elected city councilor is reacting.
This is one of those kinds of moments nobody wants to hear, the Springfield Street area turning chaotic in an instant. Agawam Police said calls came in at around 5:15 p.m. for reports of a pedestrian getting hit by a vehicle in the 400-block of Springfield Street.
When officers arrived, they found a 41-year-old man seriously injured. he was taken to a local hospital, and the details of his condition are unknown at this time.
Now we should note, this part of Agawam is densely populated with many suburban streets and commercial businesses. One thing our crew noticed is there are not many crosswalks on Springfield Street. A friend of the victim told us that part of the road that is not well lit.
Western Mass News spoke with Cecilia Calabrese, a city council-elect and longtime Agawam resident. Calabrese said she drives on Springfield Street often and that it’s vital for drivers and pedestrians to keep their eyes out for each other, “we do hear cars racing up and down the street. There have been times when I myself have been trying to cross the street, and you have to wait until the traffic, first of all, sees you and is either stopped or not coming down the street.”
The driver of the vehicle did stay on scene and is cooperating and authorities are continuing to investigate.
