Amherst Fourth of July celebration marks 175 years of community tradition

AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Residents from across the Pioneer Valley gathered Friday at McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst for the city’s annual Fourth of July celebration, an event that dates back to 1850.
The celebration, now in its 175th year, coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence. Organizers say continuing that tradition remains a priority.
“This has been consistently the sort of get together that’s brought all parts of Amherst, all parts of the valley,” said Rey Harp, Director of Recreation for Amherst. “Last year we had people from all over the valley, it was a little rainy last year, it’s not gonna be rainy today.”
Activities at the stadium grounds include carnival games, inflatables for children, hot air balloon rides, and a beer garden. Multiple food trucks are also on site.
Live music is scheduled to begin later Friday evening, with a fireworks display also planned for the night.
Harp said he wants attendees to feel a sense of unity during what he described as a historic time for the country.
