PITTSFIELD — A top prosecutor in the Berkshire District Attorney's Office has received a statewide award from the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association, the office announced Tuesday.
First Assistant District Attorney Marianne Shelvey accepted the 2026 William C. O’Malley Prosecutor of the Year award on March 26, according to a spokesperson for the office.
"Her exceptional legal skills, commitment to justice, dedication to fighting for victims of crime, and leadership make her an outstanding candidate for this esteemed recognition," said Berkshire DA Timothy Shugrue, who nominated Shelvey for the award, in a statement. "Marianne is a prosecutor of the highest caliber, and her skills and compassion have made our community safer.”

Her record includes convictions in two separate Pittsfield murder cases of defendants Lance Burke and Desmond Phillip. More recently, she oversaw the resolution of a kidnapping David Morrison committed of Laura Sheridan in Berkshire County in 1981, several years before he killed Sarah Hunter in Vermont.
Shelvey was previously a federal prosecutor in the Department of Justice's Organized Crime and Gang Section. There, DA's office spokesperson Julia Sabourin said Shelvey worked on domestic and international narcotics distribution, firearms trafficking and murder cases.
The William C. O’Malley Prosecutor of the Year goes to prosecutors "who embody professionalism, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to justice," Sabourin wrote.
First Assistant District Attorney Steven E. Gagne of the Northwestern District Attorney's Office also was named a recipient of the award.
