NORTHAMPTON, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Authorities have provided new information into the recovery of a body from the Connecticut River in Northampton.

Melissa Sippel, spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, said Northampton emergency crews were called to the area of Shephard’s Island and Middle Meadow Road around 3 p.m. Tuesday after a report came in of a body found along the river’s shoreline.

Once on-scene, crews used a boat to access the area and recover the adult male, who was pronounced dead at the scene.  Sippel noted that, although the medical examiner’s office has not yet confirmed the man’s identity, “the deceased is believed to be Jonathon Maxwell, 36, of Connecticut.”

Maxwell, of Wolcott, CT, was reported missing Sunday after he was last seen around 11 p.m. Saturday in the Meadows area of Northampton.  As of Wednesday morning, investigators have no indication of foul play and the medical examiner’s office will determine the official cause of death.

The case remains under investigation by Northampton Police, State Police detectives assigned to the D.A.’s office, and State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
