Ceremony held to honor the 80th anniversary of the B-17 crashing into Mt. Tom

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - On Saturday, Holyoke Mayor Joshua Garcia among several others came together to honor the lives lost when a B-17 bomber crashed into Mount Tom 80 years ago on July 9th.
Just before 10:30 p.m. on July 9, 1946, the plane was on its way to New York from Greenland was scheduled to stop at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee. In the rain and darkness, the B-17 crashed 300 feet below the summit of Mount Tom, killing 25 servicemen.
The honor ceremony was held at the memorial built to remember the lives lost 30 years ago, and completed with a flyover from an aircraft built from around that time.
