LUDLOW, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Memorial Day weekend is coming to a close and it’s been a busy one for travelers who have battled the weather and gas prices.

A consistent rain caused tougher road conditions on Monday.

Last week, AAA projected that nationwide, 40 million people would be traveling by car with about 970,000 of those coming from Massachusetts.

Some congestion appeared in Ludlow as people made their way back from the long weekend.

A big talking point among travelers are higher gas prices which they definitely took into account for lengthy trips.

“Trying to drive as little as I can and fill up and you use my gas wisely but yeah prices have definitely shot up,” said Nick Albrecht.

Younger drivers made up a portion of the congestion as Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer.

AAA says that according to national crash data, 30 percent of fatal crashes for young and teen drivers occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Travelers said that while the higher gas prices aren’t great, they are still determined to enjoy the long weekend with friends and family.
