CHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Memorial Drive in Chicopee is being torn up and rebuilt and if you’re heading northbound, expect construction.

MASSDOT describes the project as a comprehensive road reconstruction that fixes the base and the top asphalt layer of the road. The project for the entire corridor is scheduled to wrap up by 2029 at a cost of $12.5 million.

The project scales nearly four miles down Route 33, beginning at the intersection of Montgomery and Sheridan streets in Chicopee and extending into South Hadley around Hollywood Street.

On Monday, most of the work is concentrated near the on-ramp for the Mass Pike, the busy intersection near the Walmart. You can no longer turn left until you reach the Stop and Shop and Home Depot traffic lights.

Drivers said they were surprised the project will take multiple years.

“That’s a long time, yes,” said resident Ricky Gebo. “It’s busy. It’s a little tough around this time of year, but that’s to be expected. It’s nice to see they’re working hard and doing the best they can.”

Crews out on Monday were digging up large parts of the road and laying down fresh asphalt. Over the course of the next three years, they will move onto paving.

In addition, drivers and pedestrians can expect guardrail repairs, new curb ramps, and a new section of sidewalk.

MASSDOT said the work will be done in seasons or this time each year and some work will be done at night in order to reduce the effects on drivers and businesses.
