SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Crews are pulling a pickup truck out of a pond in Southwick after it broke through ice and fell in four months ago.

Authorities say the truck sank about 18 feet to the bottom of Middle Pond about 100 yards offshore. The driver and his dog escaped, but left the truck behind for months.

“I have been here almost 25 years,” said Thomas Krutka, detective sergeant for the Southwick Police Department. “We have seen trucks submerged usually at the boar ramp, they have a little mishap, but nothing in the middle of the lake like this.”

Multiple department took park in the heavy lifting on Monday. About 8,800 pounds of pressure and three airbags inflated with tanks are being used to pull the truck out of the mud, Krutka said.

The Western Mass Regional Dive Team used sonar and radar to locate the truck. The team is made up of first responders from Northampton, South Hadley, Westfield, Chicopee, and state police.

“They train quite often for issues just like this, so they are well equipped and it is a very methodical process,” Krutka said. “They are getting ready to raise it up right now and we will see how it goes.”

The truck is expected to be towed by Monday evening.
