Devastating defeat ends Springfield Thunderbirds 2025-2026 season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The Springfield Thunderbirds’ season has come to an end. Saturday’s game determined who would make it to the second-to-last round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.
The Thunderbirds lost in a deciding game against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Akil Thomas scored the first and only goal for the Thunderbirds during the third period. The team ultimately lost 8 to 1 at the Mohegan Arena.
During a watch party on Saturday, fans shared some of their favorite moments and plays from the playoffs, “I mean there’s a ton that the goalie Georgii’s made, he’s phenomenal, but really I would have to say probably game two, our comeback in overtime, that was probably the best so far,” said Chris Labossiere.
“When (the Thunderbirds) beat (the Providence Bruins) in their own stadium, we were actually there for game one, it was pretty incredible for us,” said Garrett Baker.
Though the season has come to an end, the T-Birds said they’re excited for the future as they soon plan to celebrate 100 years of hockey in the city.
