The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is starting back up in Berkshire County. Availability begins Jan. 26 in four locations across the Berkshires.

PITTSFIELD — Berkshire County residents who earned less than $69,000 last year, as well as people with disabilities and older adults, are eligible to participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which is facilitated by Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity.

The program offers free income tax preparation. It is IRS-supported, and all volunteers have received extensive training and hold the required IRS certifications.

The program's services will begin Jan. 26, offering both scheduled, in-person tax appointments and drop-off options in Pittsfield and South County.

The program is being offered at four locations, two of which are in Pittsfield: 314 Columbus Ave. and the community space at Greylock Federal Credit Union, 75 Kellogg St. Appointments are available from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursdays.

The program also runs from 2 to 5:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Mason Library at 231 Main St. in Great Barrington. Assistance also is available at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts by appointment only.

For information or to make an appointment at any location, residents can call 413-442-3184 or visit berkshirehabitat.org/VITA.

Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity has been running the program for more than a dozen years in the county.

“Most of our volunteers return year after year to support this essential service for underserved residents of Berkshire County,” said Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity CEO Carolyn Valli.

“Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, we’re fully prepared to support our clients throughout tax season,” said Lynne Newton, the community navigator and VITA program coordinator for the organization.

The organization also offers language support, including Spanish interpretation by appointment, to ensure residents feel comfortable navigating IRS requirements.
