DNA testing helps catch Agawam criminal from 2022 case

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - A DNA analysis determined that an Agawam resident was involved in the theft of a Mercedes in South Hadley nearly four years ago.
Police said on Sept. 19, 2022, a victim left his car running in the parking lot of a Cumberland Farms to buy scratch tickets. When he left the store, his Mercedes was gone.
Personal items, including $600 in cash and the victim’s only pair of dentures, were in the car at the time.
Security footage showed the alleged thief wearing the clothes of a construction worker. Police were able to get a description of him with the video.
A few days after the incident, the car was found in town with items inside consistent with what was seen in the video. Those items were sent to the Mass State Crime Lab for DNA analysis.
The test results determined the suspect to be an Agawam resident with a lengthy criminal history. He is now being charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and larceny over $2,000.
