DPW crews keeping roads clear for last-minute shoppers

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -- Tuesday is bringing in snow, forcing some people to adjust their holiday plans. Now shoppers are rushing to the stores, and DPW crews are treating the streets.
We visited West Springfield DPW’s Operations Center on Westfield Street, where we saw crews loading salt in a storing area at the back of the lot.
We also saw vehicles with plows attached, just so they are at the ready in case Tuesday’s snow becomes a plowable situation.
West Springfield DPW Director Trevor Wood tells us many of the main roads and side streets have been pretreated with liquid magnesium.
He also tells us, “We’re going to get all of the trucks loaded up with salt, get them all fueled up and ready to go [Tuesday] morning.”
Of course, this comes as we are now in the holiday rush, meaning a good number of people here in the area doing some last-minute Christmas shopping at several malls and plazas.
Western Mass News visited the Riverdale Shops in West Springfield to speak with some shoppers on their shopping before the snow starts to fall.
Our crews saw that many of the lots were crowded, and there were long lines at the entrances to the plaza just off of Route 5.
We spoke with Alina Komerzan, a shopper from Northfield, who tells us it was a no-brainer to go shopping today, saying, “Where we are, a small town, I don’t know if I’m going to get out from there. So, I want to get it over with, and I’m hosting Christmas.”
Another shopper, Irene Koutroubila from Longmeadow, stopped by Kohls early Monday afternoon, telling us, “Do not wait until the very last minute because you don’t know what you might find. Or, just be safe.”
Keep in mind if you plan to go out; MassDOT vehicles could be out on Route 5 and parts of Route 20 during Tuesday’s snow showers.
