DPW working around the clock as Springfield plows snowfall

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - As the frigid weather sticks around, we’re checking in with Springfield Department of Public Works Officials To See How Road Conditions Are Shaping Up, Especially On The Sides Street Throughout The City.
DPW officials told Western Mass News those side streets are presenting the most challenges following this weekend storm.
The reason? Too much snow.
Springfield DPW Director, Chris Cignoli, said crews have been working around the clock to clear roads throughout the city.
Cignoli told us that crews took care of the main roads first during the storm, then went to residential neighborhoods and tried to open up the streets as best as they could, even if they were just passing down the road once.
With the large amount of snow we received, plow drivers had to quickly jump back on the main roads and make sure they were clear, “our issue that we really ran into is that a lot of the equipment we have for contractors is small trucks and you know we widen the street out to a certain point and there is just no more place to put the snow even if you plow it all the way it just falls back down. From an overall standpoint, it was a volume of snow. It was light snow but once you get it to the curb you can’t get it any father so that’s really the problem we’ve been getting into,” Cignoli said.
Cignoli also said the city will be doing some snow removal in the downtown area in the coming days.
He as well added that if your street has an issue and is in need of plowing, contact the Department of Public Works.
Officials also asked residents to have patience during the next few days as crews work to clear the roads.
