EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The Easthampton City Council passed a resolution in support of holding federal immigration agents accountable for violation of Massachusetts criminal law.

The resolution is similar to those adopted by Northampton and Amherst, calling on state and local officials to take more drastic measures to protect the commonwealth, including investigating ICE encounters.

During Wednesday’s meeting, Easthampton council members read through key provisions of the resolution, mainly centered on condemning the quote “unconstitutional actions of President Trump, his appointees, and federal agents... attacking Bay staters for their perceived race or ethnicity.”

The resolution ended, calling on the governor to end all cooperation with ICE — including the 287 agreement with the state’s Department of Corrections, and any other informal agreements in place.

The 287 agreement allows state officers to process potential deportation cases with state-run prisons. A copy of the resolution is being sent to the governor’s administration, the state attorney general, and the Northwestern District Attorney.
