Emergency crews respond to fire, flooding at Amherst apartments

AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Around 2 a.m. on Saturday morning, the Amherst Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at the Brandywine Apartments in the North Amherst neighborhood.
Upon arriving, fire crews spotted the fire coming from the back porch of a third floor apartment that shot into the walls and the ceiling.
Most of the fire was put out fairly quick and without any injury. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but has been determined to have started on the porch. The residents of the apartment have since been relocated to another apartment.
After crews put out the fire, crews were then notified of a water main within another building at Brandywine had broken. The break managed to flood four apartments within that building, displacing 10 residents who live there.
Those residents are currently being assisted by UMass Amherst to find alternative housing.
