NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Thanks to a large donation, Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton is getting some major upgrades.

A $16 million renovation campaign has been going on for over four years and is the largest capital campaign in the hospital’s 140-year history.

The new and improved emergency department is now 40 percent larger than the previous space with an additional nine patient rooms including more behavioral health beds.

Renovations have been made over the last few years with the expanded section of the emergency department opening last summer and finishing this spring.

The donor, Mary Ann Cofrin, also gifted a 13′ plaque on the exterior of the hospital which reads “You are Welcome.”

During Friday’s celebration of the renovation, Cofrin explained why she chose that message, saying in short “it is important to say the words ‘you are welcome here,’ so people know that if you are sick, you can be cared for at Cooley Dickinson by trusted, compassionate, and highly skilled providers.”
