ENFIELD, Conn. (WFSB) -Enfield Square mall has been shut down temporarily while crews work to repair damage caused by the recent cold snap.

The mall’s building department ordered the closure after contractors failed to complete weekend repairs on time. The problems stem from winter weather that damaged several systems inside the shopping center.

A sprinkler head burst in an empty store space, creating the most pressing safety concern. Additionally, pipes froze in the old movie theater area, which has been closed to shoppers since 2023, causing water damage.

Mall officials had hoped to have everything fixed over the weekend, but the repair crew couldn’t finish the work by Monday morning. That left building inspectors with no choice but to keep the doors closed until the issues are resolved.

Less than a handful of businesses still operate inside the mall. Redevelopment plans are in the works, but until then, it proves to be a continued issue for the town.

The Target in the mall operates under a separate system because it was an addition to the building. There are barricades inside the mall that separate for shoppers where they can and can’t go.

Back in April 2024, the I-Team found the mall’s owner had a violation notice for not maintaining the property and there were multiple roof collapses in the Macy’s store in the years prior.

The sprinkler repair is now scheduled for Thursday, followed by heating system work in the mall’s mechanical rooms. An HVAC technician will need to replace a motor that helps heat the sprinkler system areas.

Mall officials say they’re pushing to reopen as soon as safety inspectors give the all-clear.
