CHICOPEE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Western Mass News is getting answers on how local emergency crews are working outside during the extreme cold we’ve been experiencing.

While Chicopee Fire officials told us they’ve been lucky enough not to deal with any major fires during the days when the temps have been at their coldest this season, they also said they’re prepared to respond to any emergency no matter the weather.

We spoke with Chicopee Fire Captain Katie Collins-Kalbaugh, she told us in the past, frigid weather has made responding to emergencies a lot harder for the department, “you have water freezing sometimes while your operating, you have individuals that your concerned about them suffering from hypothermia while you’re trying to work so it is really challenging.”

Captain Collins also reminded folks that prevention is key when it comes to fire safety.

She reminds everyone to make sure their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly and to make sure you’re taking the proper safety precautions when using things like space heaters, fireplaces and solid fuel stoves.

Coming up here later tonight on Western Mass News at 10 and 11, we’ll have more from fire officials on the challenges the frigid weather poses for them and their message to residents during these extremely cold days.
