NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Northampton is getting new money to make one of its most popular bike paths easier for everyone to reach.

The city’s office of planning and sustainability says it’s won a $157,000 dollar MassTrails grant to design a universally accessible connection from Northern Avenue to the Norwottuck section of the Masscentral rail trail.

Right now, neighbors use a steep, informal “desire path” to get to the tail, but it only works in good weather and for people without mobility issues.

The new project will create a formal, safe connector so hundreds of residents in that area can get direct access regardless of ability level.

The grant will be matched with $45,000 in community preservation act funds and will pay for construction-ready plans.
