Hampden County Sheriff’s Office shares boating safety tips on Memorial Day weekend

LUDLOW, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - An important reminder tonight for anyone heading out on the water this weekend from the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office. Boaters should be aware of the recent Hanson-Milone Boating Safety Act, which includes new age and equipment requirements.
Among them — anyone born after January 1st, 1989, needs a boater safety certificate to drive a boat. Also, you must be 12 years old to drive a boat and 16 to operate a jet ski. Carry a marine VHF radio and remember channel 16 is the designated distress channel.
Finally, be cautious of “boater’s hypnosis” when sun, wind, vibration, and motion can reduce alertness and reaction time — especially when combined with alcohol.
