HOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - New safety measures are going up at a busy intersection after the state recommended a number of intersections where accidents keep happening.

The signs were placed on the intersection of Elm Street and Appleton Street, as well as Elm Street and Sargeant Street. Western Mass News went to find out how the people and families are affected by this.

“It’s a little dangerous. People aren’t necessarily paying attention. I actually just witnessed the accident at the corner of Appleton and Linden because of the way that the, you know, confusion of who goes first and everything,” that’s Holyoke resident Laura Clark, who lives just down the street from the intersection at Elm and Appleton, and it’s been a long time coming for those trying to cross.

“I’m very excited about the new stop signs, especially with my baby. I don’t want to be walking across the street and have to, oh, my God, you know? So I’m very happy about the new safety precautions,” Clark said.

Holyoke DPW crews were out all morning painting the roads with stoppage warnings on the street, hoping that by slowing drivers down. It will create less chaos at the intersection. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation recommended new signs for intersections across Holyoke, saying that Elm Street and Appleton Street in particular saw at least 2 confirmed crashes in the last year coming across Appleton.

These new signs come with some modern touches; flashing red lights, which Holyoke’s Department of Public Works said will help catch the attention of drivers, especially for those who regularly come through.

“There’s a lot that goes into trying to change the dynamics of an intersection. When somebody drives the same road every single day for years, then all of a sudden there’s a change,” said Holyoke DPW Director Michael Gallagher, “They increase visibility there. Now they’re a feature to grab the road user’s eye when you’re driving down the road and you see something blinking.”

There are also new signs further down Elm Street at the intersection with Sargeant Street, and those lights are on.
