Increased fines do little to quell illegal dumping of garbage
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - Despite West Springfield’s efforts, illegal dumping of trash persists especially in popular spots.
Last year, the town council increased the fines for illegal dumping to $300 per offense and the town shares any footage or information on social media if they cannot locate those responsible.
The most recent dumping containing the broken remains of air conditioners, computers, and a number of full trash bags was found on Agawam Road. Other popular dumping spots include the Bear Hole Reservoir and other bridges and industrial areas.
It’s a big problem for the town and Mayor William Reichelt says it comes down to people putting in the effort to dispose of their garbage.
“They either aren’t from the area or just don’t want to follow the rules or just don’t care,” he said. “So that’s why the council did take the steps to increase the fines. If we are able to get you and fine you, you’re gonna care.”
The most recent pile was found near a Savers store. Mayor Reichelt said donation is a better option.
