WEST SPRINGFIELD — Former Army Maj. Mustafa Thompson, speaker for this year’s Veterans Day observance on the Town Common, challenged his audience Tuesday to commit to one act of service.

“Just one act,” Thompson said. “Call a veteran on the telephone. Say, ‘Hi.’ Shake a hand. Take someone out to coffee. Take them to an appointment. Go to the grocery store for them.”
