Local Corrections Officer seriously hurt in off-duty accident

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - A Hampden County Corrections Officer has suffered critical injuries following an off-duty accident, authorities report.
According to the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office, 23-year-old, Leenayhsia Pabon, was injured during the holidays on Saturday, December 20th in Springfield.
Pabon has been with the Sheriff’s Office for nearly a year now, serving at the Western Massachusetts Regional Women’s Correctional Center in Chicopee. She’s also a mother with two young children, ages 3 and 6.
Robert Rizzuto, spokesperson for the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office, explained to Western Mass News what happened.
“She fell off the back of a motorcycle,” Rizzuto told us.
As of Monday, Pabon was listed in stable but critical condition at the hospital.
“When something like this happens, it affects all of us. Especially during the holiday season, moments like these remind us how closely connected we are as a department and as a community,” noted Sheriff Nick Cocchi.
Pabon is described by her co-workers as having an “infectious smile, kindness, and (a) positive spirit.” Already in the short period of time she’s worked at the Sheriff’s Office, we’re told she’s “left a lasting impression on her colleagues” who are now helping her and her children.
“They’re working with the family to keep up with paying Officer Pabon’s bills,” explained Rizzuto.
But they can’t do this alone and need help from the community.

“We greatly appreciate the outpouring of support, prayers, and compassion for Officer Pabon and her family. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts,” noted the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office.
