NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - A local restaurant owner saved a choking person in Northampton earlier in the month, fire rescue said.

A choking emergency was reported in the downtown area on the evening of June 4. Before first responders arrived, a bystander performed the Heimlich.

After becoming aware that a man was choking, Jeremy Werther, owner of Homestead, quickly stepped in to perform the Heimlich maneuver.

A large piece of food was dislodged from the man’s throat. He was able to breathe normally and declined further treatment.

“{Werther’s} response serves as a great reminder of the importance of CPR and first aid training and the impact an ordinary person can have during an emergency,” Northampton Fire Rescue said.
