PITTSFIELD — Affordable and workforce housing opportunities are currently available in Berkshire County, with Construct Inc. leasing apartments in Stockbridge and Great Barrington and Hearthway maintaining a short waitlist for subsidized units in Pittsfield.

More than half of Berkshire County renters are considered cost-burdened, spending more than 30 percent of their income on housing, according to federal data. Housing advocates say the shortage of available units has pushed rents higher and made affordable housing opportunities increasingly scarce.

Construct currently has two apartments available in Pinewood Apartments at 3 W. Stockbridge Road, Stockbridge, and multiple apartments available at the Windflower Inn at 684 S. Egremont Road, Great Barrington.

One of the units at Pinewood is an income-limited two-bed, one-bath apartment leasing for $1,390 a month. Families must make less than 60 percent of the area median income, which is $71,160 for three people. The other apartment is market rate and has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It is leasing for $2,000 a month.

Both apartments have washer and dryer hookups. Utilities are not included. To start the application process, fill out Construct's pre-application form at constructberkshires.org.

Construct's Wildflower Inn also has availability for its workforce housing. Units rent between $850 and $950 a month, and they can be leased month to month. Each unit has a private bathroom, but tenants share the commercial kitchen and washer and dryer. All utilities are included, with the property providing WiFi and air conditioning.

The former inn sits a mile from Egremont's Main Street and 3 miles from Great Barrington's downtown. To apply, visit constructberkshires.org.

Hearthway officials say there is a low-waitlist for one-bedroom apartments at the Berkshire Mews. This is not one single property but is spread across seven locations in Pittsfield. The units are subsidized, so tenants will only pay 30 percent of their income on rent.

To qualify for the waitlist, applicants must make less than 50 percent of the area median income, which is $46,100 for one person and $52,700 for two. Applicants must also be elderly, disabled or have dependents. The application can be accessed by contacting Hearthway at [email protected].
