HINSDALE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Our coverage on this week’s police-involved shooting out of Hinsdale continues. The Berkshire District Attorney held a press conference in Pittsfield today to explain where things stand in the investigation. Western Mass News was there and has been covering all of the developments since the beginning.

We now know the identity of the suspect and a better idea of what led to this incident, which the Berkshire D.A. called the affair “tragic.” according to D.A. Timothy Shugrue, the male civilian who was killed Wednesday is 27-year-old Biagio Kauvil of New York.

Shugrue says Kauvil had expressed “paranoid and delusional thoughts” that he expressed with the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center and on social media, as well as to his family and law enforcement.

It was revealed Kauvil had felt he was being listened to by law enforcement and was being tapped by organized crime groups. Shugrue made it clear this person was not wanted by the FBI in any capacity.

At about 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, though, Hinsdale Police Chief Shawn Boyne, followed by other officers responded to 53 Off South Street as multiple 911 calls were made by Kauvil.

After trying to reason with Kauvil, it was not until around 11:00 a.m. when officers decided to breach a first-floor bedroom. A struggle ensued with Kauvil having a small gun in his left hand.

We should note Kauvil did have a license to carry, but officers were informed at the beginning of this situation that he did not have a weapon on him. While there was a struggle, Kauvil said “just kill me.”

When things escalated, the gun Kauvil had on him went off, hitting Hinsdale Police Sergeant Dominick Crupi in the hand and Chief Boyne in the chest. Boyne, luckily, was wearing a vest. A taser was discharged against Kauvil twice before another officer fired their weapon.

Sgt. Crupi was accidentally hit in the elbow before another shot struck Kauvil. Kauvil ended dying from his injuries at Berkshire Medical Center. Chief Boyne was released from the hospital later that day, while Sgt. Crupi is still undergoing treatment at Albany Medical Center in New York. Both officers’ injuries are non-life threatening.

Shugrue told reporters Friday the overall community and local law enforcement are shocked, “the officers are devasted. They’re upset. Everybody who was in the room is getting mental health treatment themselves right now. This is a very volatile, difficult situation. Everybody feels horrible. This is a terrible tragedy, and it affects them gravely.”

The D.A. also said incidents like these in his county are rare, “it’s not common at all. It’s very uncommon. I think as time goes on, the more we educate the community, and we educate all of us about mental health, the more that we deal with the mental health issues.”

Kauvil did deal with mental health issues, and Shugrue did focus on that for a fair amount of time during this conference.
