Man pushing shopping cart seriously injured after being hit by vehicle in West Springfield

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Authorities are investigating after a man was hit by a vehicle Thursday in West Springfield.
West Springfield Police Sgt. Thomas Burke Jr. said officers were called to the area of 175 Memorial Avenue around 8:15 p.m. He noted that a preliminary investigation indicates that a 53-year-old man was pushing a shopping cart while walking eastbound in the right hand travel lane when he was hit from behind by an eastbound vehicle.
The man was taken to Baystate Medical Center with serious injuries. As of Friday afternoon, investigators said he is in stable condition.
Burke added that the driver involved stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. He noted that speed does not appear to be a factor in the incident and no charged have been filed as of Friday afternoon.
The crash remains under investigation by the West Springfield Police Department’s accident reconstruction team, in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney’s Office.
