Medical professionals share tips to stay warm ahead of artic blast

CHICOPEE, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Our team coverage now turns to how you can stay safe in this extreme cold we’re experiencing. There’s lots of things we can do to stay safe during the frigid cold, but health experts tell us it really just comes down to three main points.
Number one: wear multiple insulating layers, that means hats, scarfs, mittens and even layering up on extra pants, socks, and jackets if you plan on being outside for an extended period of time.
Number two: stay dry, wet clothing chills the body rapidly, so if your clothes do get damp outside be sure to change into something dry immediately.
Finally, number three: limit your time outdoors to prevent things like frostbite and hypothermia.
Health officials tell us it doesn’t take long for the frigid weather to have an affect on your body, said “with the weather we have coming in it can happen so quickly. It can happen so quick so especially for the elderly population or children really make sure their avoiding being outsides. Put on a hat, cover all skin, it’s very very cold so with the wind you really need to limit it as much as possible,” said Kim D’Angelo of American Medical Response.
