Monday to mark 15 years since tornado ripped through Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - It has been almost exactly 15 years since an EF-3 tornado tore through the region and left massive destruction behind.
On June 1, 2011, the tornado traveled 38 miles from Westfield to Southbridge, cutting right through the City of Springfield. Peak winds were estimated at around 160 miles per hour, three people were killed and 200 others were injured
The tornado destroyed 1,400 homes and nearly 80 businesses and ripped up heavy forests in Westfield and Agawam.
Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno is asking the community to participate in a moment of silence on Monday at 4:38 p.m., the exact time the tornado touched down in Springfield
