Monterey man arrested after home fire ruled arson

MONTEREY — Police have arrested a man in connection with a fire at his home that investigators say was intentionally set early Wednesday.
After searching for hours in a wooded area, including parts of Beartown State Forest, state police apprehended John Rohane, 60, according to a statement Wednesday evening from the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The Monterey Fire Department responded about 3:50 a.m. to a structure fire at the home at 340 Main Road. No injuries were reported.
Shortly after 11:30 a.m., no signs of fire were visible from the area of Main Road where vehicles, representing multiple law enforcement agencies, were parked, including at least 10 local and state police vehicles, an ambulance and a state fire marshal truck.
A statement released later in the day indicated police were looking for Rohane, and emphasized that anyone who sees him should call 911 and not approach him.
“Based on an examination of the scene, witness interviews, and other evidence, State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office determined that the fire had been intentionally set,” the statement said.
He was transported to an area hospital for issues unrelated to the fire or his arrest, according to the statement.
The scene was a short drive from the town center in a wooded stretch of Main Road.
