Mount Greylock roads and Bascom Lodge to open for the season

Mark your calendar: The automobile roads on Mount Greylock will open for the season next Saturday.
And the week after, on May 23, Bascom Lodge and the Veterans War Memorial Tower will open — just in time for Memorial Day.
At 3,491 feet, Mount Greylock is the highest point in Massachusetts, where visitors can see as far as 90 miles on a clear day. The automobile roads to the summit will be open until Oct. 30 this year. It's a popular spot for hiking, camping and hunting.
On May 22, the Sperry Road Campground will reopen with three solar-powered flush toilets after being closed for several years. It features 18 tent sites, nine group sites, picnic tables and fire rings, as well as bear-proof storage lockers and five lean-to shelters available by reservation. Repairs are also planned for the Stoney Ledge, Upper and Chimney shelters. The campground is available by reservation.
Bascom Lodge announced is hiring multiple positions for the season, including breakfast, lunch and dinner cooks, cashiers, reception desk workers, housekeepers, waiters and dishwashers. Those interested should contact the lodge at [email protected] or 917-568-3712.
Built during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the lodge now hosts guests on the summit and offers free programming. Last year, it hosted wine tastings, authors, musicians and nature-based workshops. It has not yet announced its programming for this season, but will offer lodging and breakfast, lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday.
For those driving to the summit, a restriction on vehicles longer than 22 feet remains in place. The restriction was implemented in 2021 after a 2019 engineering report found that vehicles longer than a passenger car would be unable to navigate the narrow roads while remaining in the demarcated lanes on Notch, Rockwell and Summit roads.
