NCAA responds to UMass Minutemen Final Four push

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The NCAA has responded as a push is underway to restore the achievements of the 1996 UMass Minutemen Basketball Team.
While they did not directly address the petition, they explained that the penalty has been consistently applied in cases that involve ineligible competition or an ineligible player.
That Final Four appearance was vacated after it was discovered that minutemen star Center Marcus Camby had accepted gifts and cash from sports agents.
This was strictly prohibited at time, but due to the changing landscape, alumni asked the NCAA to consider restoring the achievements.
The NCAA said the school does have an opportunity to appeal and the case would be reviewed.
