NORTH ADAMS — The city will swear in its newly elected officials on New Year's Day in the City Council Chambers in City Hall.

At 11 a.m. on Jan. 1, City Clerk Tina Leonesio will lead the inauguration ceremony of the mayor, city councilors, the North Adams School Committee and the Northern Berkshire Regional Vocational School Committee.

The ceremony is open to the public and Leonesio asked that people arrive 15 to 20 minutes prior to the start to ensure everyone is seated on time. For those that can't attend in-person, the meeting will be broadcast live on Northern Berkshire Community Television, channel 1303, and will be posted to their website as soon as possible, according to the ceremony agenda. It will also be livestreamed on the city's Youtube channel.

November's election brought back Mayor Jennifer Macksey for a third-term, elected three new city councilors and shifted the council to a women majority for the first time ever.

At the inauguration, newcomers Lillian Zavatsky, Marie McCarron and Alexa MacDonald will be sworn in with incumbents Keith Bona, Pete Breen, Lisa Blackmer, Andrew Fitch and current President Bryan Sapienza, who will pass the job to a new president. Once elected, they will give an inaugural address.

She will also make committee and liaison assignments and new councilors MacDonald and Lavatsky will draw council seats.

North Adams School Committee incumbents Emily Daunis and David Sookie will also take their oath, but a third school committee seat still awaits appointment at a later date.

Resident and former educator Chelsey Ciolkowski withdrew her name a few weeks before the election after getting a job with the school district. She still placed third in a race where the top three finishers were elected. The City Council and School Committee is currently soliciting letters of interest and will host a joint convention on Jan. 13 to fill her empty spot.

At the end of the ceremony, Mayor Jennifer Macksey will take her oath and then make her inaugural address.

The City Council officially takes office Jan. 1, but the Mayor does not officially start until the first Monday in January, according to the city charter. However, it has become a city tradition to ceremonially swear her in with the rest of the city on New Year's Day.
