Perennials or Annuals? Ludlow Expert Breaks Down What to Plant Now

LUDLOW, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - A few days into summer, it’s still not too late for western Massachusetts gardeners to get plants in the ground and add quick color ahead of the Fourth of July, according to Karen Randall of Randall’s Farm and Greenhouse in Ludlow.
With what she described as “perfect June weather” and the holiday approaching, Randall recommended planting larger annuals now for immediate impact. Annuals provide color through the summer but typically do not survive New England winters, she said.
“This is the time of year where you want to plant big annual plants,” Randall said, suggesting oversized varieties — including zinnias and marigolds — that can be placed directly into beds or transferred into larger containers around patios and pools.
For gardeners looking for plants that return each year, Randall pointed to perennials, which she said usually bloom for about a month or longer depending on the variety. She said the greenhouse is carrying perennials in larger pots that are already blooming so customers can see what they are buying before planting.
Randall emphasized watering as the key task for early-summer planting, when long days and stronger sun can dry out soil quickly. She advised gardeners to water thoroughly every few days rather than giving plants small amounts of water daily.
“Soak your garden in two or three days, take another look,” she said, adding that container gardens often hold moisture longer when plants are placed in larger pots.
