SAUGERTIES, N.Y. — A Pittsfield man was killed and six others — including three other Berkshire County residents — were injured Sunday night in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 87.

Joseph Mensah-Otoo, 42, of Pittsfield was driving south on the northbound side of the New York State Thruway between Exits 19 and 20 in Saugerties at about 9:11 p.m. when he collided with three northbound vehicles: a 2022 Honda, a 2020 BMW and a 2017 Ford F-150, according to a statement by New York State Police.

Mensah-Otoo, who was the lone occupant in a 2025 Toyota, was ejected from the vehicle, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Six others were injured, including two 19-year-old men, both from Dalton; a 19-year-old man from Hinsdale; a 37-year-old man from New City, N.Y.; and a 59-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, both from Cohoes, N.Y. All were taken to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening.

It was not clear which vehicle or vehicles the other Berkshire residents were in.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Saugerties is about 45 miles south of Albany.
