STOCKBRIDGE — The Red Lion Inn has been trolling passersby on Main Street every April 1 since 2004, and this year's banner landed with perfect timing.

The historic hotel hung a sign reading "New Ballroom Under Construction!" in a wink to President Donald Trump's $400 million White House ballroom project.

The Red Lion Inn celebrated April Fools’ Day with a banner across the front entrance that read ‘New Ballroom Under Construction” on Wednesday.

A federal judge ordered Trump to halt construction on the controversial project just one day earlier.

The tradition of adorning the front of the iconic establishment with joke banners on April Fools' Day was started by the late co-owner Jack Fitzpatrick, and the inn has kept it going ever since.

Past banners have ranged from welcoming AIG executives (in 2009, when the insurer was making headlines for doling out multi-million bonuses after receiving a massive taxpayer-funded bailout) to advertising a cannabis-infused chicken pot pie.

They skipped the banner last year, replacing it with a poster of the U.S. Constitution when the political climate felt too serious to joke about.

Instead of its usual April Fool’s joke banner, the Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge posted a copy of the U.S. Constitution outside its front door on Tuesday. A Fitzpatrick family member explained that the traditional prank banner “just didn’t feel right because of the real suffering, anxiety and fear that people are feeling.”

Clearly, the inn has found its footing again.
