WESTFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) - Two hikers stranded between Reservoir Road in Westfield and Pitcher Street in Montgomery are now safe thanks to the Westfield Fire Department and others. Around 7:20 p.m. Saturday night, the Massachusetts State Police requested the fire department’s help.

Even though police made contact via cell phone, they could not pin the pair’s location through GPS. Instead, they used a web-based locating service to find the hiker’s exact coordinates, but the challenges didn’t end there.

The Westfield Utility Task Vehicle made it within 200 feet of the hikers but were unable to reach them due to steep elevation and challenging terrain. Instead, the rescue team reached them on foot and escorted the hikers back to the vehicle. Despite the cold and rain, no injuries have been reported, and they rescued by 9 p.m.
