School athletic board denies Agawam’s appeal to continue in softball playoffs

AGAWAM, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The Agawam High School softball team now knows its fate, the PVIAC Executive Board has denied the school’s appeal to play in the western Massachusetts championship game, even after the brownies won their semifinal matchup earlier today.
Even though the Brownies won on Wednesday night here at Borgatti Park, Agawam’s season in the Western Mass Tournament will still come to an end with no possibility to win a championship. The final score was 6-4 to Agawam.
In a letter sent to families on Wednesday, school officials confirmed the PVIAC Executive Board denied the district’s appeal to restore the softball team’s full postseason eligibility.
The issue stemmed from what administrators describe as a ‘clerical error’ on the school’s MIAA commitment form, specifically, a missing “final destination game” entry that would have identified a western Mass. Championship appearance. Because of that omission, the PVIAC ruled that the Brownies did not meet tournament requirements.
Agawam appealed the decision and was granted a partial compromise allowing the team to continue through the semifinal round, but not beyond it.
School officials calling the decision “heartbreaking” and argued the consequences should not fall on student-athletes who had no role in the paperwork process. “it’s just disappointment really for the kids, I played sports in high school, so I get it I know what it’s like to what to compete and they don’t want to get caught up in the technicalities,” said Michael Perry, a member of the Agawam School Committee, “just because a rule is broken inadvertently, our kids should never face the punishment for that I think it’s disproportionate.”
The Brownies are still eligible for the Division 2 State Tournament but for now, their western Mass. title hopes remain out of reach. Western Mass News did reach out to the MIAA for comment on the matter, but we have not yet heard back.
Later tonight on Western Mass News at 10 and 11, we’ll have more from supporters of Agawam here today sharing their thoughts on the MIAA’S final decision.
