Several residents receive hate letters in Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The Town of Amherst spokesperson Samantha Giffen said that on Wednesday, April 29th, the Amherst Police Department received complaints from about 7 residents that have had letters placed on their cars filled with hate speech.
The letters allegedly have targeted African American community and was addressed from the ‘Advancement of American Civilization’. Police were not able to find out any group associated with that name.
The Town of Amherst released a response to these letters saying in part, “We condemn the racist and outright inaccurate statements made within the letter regarding Black people or those of African descent. These statements are deeply upsetting and do not reflect the values of our Town, which are built on principles of inclusion and respect. Everyone in our community deserves to feel safe and respected.”
Amherst Police will continue to investigate the source of the letters.
