Small business owners question when they can reopen at Enfield Square Mall

ENFIELD, CT (WGGB/WSHM) - The Enfield Square Mall has been temporarily shut down since last week while crews work to repair damage to pipes caused by the recent cold weather. Western Mass News is getting answers on how business owners in the mall are handling the situation from outside the locked doors.
If you were hoping to get into the Enfield Square Mall, you might be out of luck, at least for the time being. The mall is currently temporarily closed.
The mall’s building department ordered the closure after weekend repairs weren’t completed on time, the main problems stemming from damaging winter weather.
Justin Haynes, owner of Jus10h, a fashion brand with a storefront in the mall, TOLD Western Mass News how building ownership broke the news to him, “We had a one-on-one. They told us what was going on and let us know the next steps. We, we had ample time to do what we needed to do.”
Haynes now unable to get into his store, along with several other business owners who are locked out. Still, this isn’t worst case scenario for Haynes, “I’m, I’m able to work around it. Um, I’ve had some really good, uh, people who have been so helpful since, uh, since they found out the mall was closed.”
Since the Target operates under a separate system, that is the only store that remains open at this time. That mall entrance is barricaded off, preventing shoppers from venturing anywhere else.
“I would rather that they do this to make sure that everybody’s safe, rather than we be in a structured foundation that anything could happen,” Haynes said.
As for when the mall is set to reopen to storeowners and to the public, “we don’t know. We’re just waiting until everything is fixed. I think all of us are patiently waiting and doing what we need to do so that we can get back in,” Haynes said.
Western Mass News reached out to the Enfield Square Mall for comment, but we have not yet heard back. however, their ownership did write a statement to WFSB, our sister station in Hartford, which reads, “while the availability of qualified contractors during challenging winter weather conditions is limited, the necessary repair work is actively underway, and Management is working diligently to restore access to the mall as quickly and safely as possible.”
