Soldier On receives new bus for carrying veterans

AGAWAM, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - The mission for Solider On is simple, to end homelessness for veterans. Founded in 1994, Solider On is a non-profit based in Pittsfield, Mass. and aims to provide homeless veterans and families with housing and other services such as transportation.
That was the focus of the event in Feeding Hills on Wednesday, where they presented a new bus that was gifted from an anonymous donor. Buses like this, which is a newly renovated school bus and handicap accessible, will help veterans get to much needed medical appointments or community events.
“It’s wrapped beautifully. They did a nice job. Logos for all the armed service branches and a nice big American flag on it. So, it’s really sharp. And where it used to say school bus, it says “Soldier On” on it now,” said the Executive Director of Transportation at Soldier On’s Cory Bazinet.
Solider On has built numerous housing projects in places like Northampton, and many other Massachusetts towns where some veterans are living on the street. Their impact can be seen all over the northeast, with housing for as many as 70 vets as far as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.
When they started 25 years ago, they had just six employees. Now it’s over 200 and the veterans that they’re helping need every single one of them.
“Well, the veterans here are out in full force. They love support. They love people. But most importantly, they love the awareness that this helps provide, that these men and women served our country, and now they need the support of the community,” said Chief Executive Officer of Soldier On Bruce Buckley.
They also provide temporary or short-term housing for veterans in need of immediate help.
